Abstract

The increase in alcohol consumption over recent years in many countries, has led to an increase in epidemiological studies and research related to the effects of alcohol abuse on physical and mental health. Currently, many reviews and meta-analyses are studying the correlation between alcohol abuse and dementia, but the results are contradictory A systematic electronic search was conducted to investigate studies and meta-analyzes from the literature in the PubMed database (2017–2021, n=2525). We looked for relevant studies using the following keywords: „alcohol and dementia”, „alcohol and cognitive decline”. 1393 articles were identified, of which 796 – „alcohol and dementia” and 597 – „alcohol and cognitive decline”. A total of 21 studies were selected and included in the analysis. Prolonged and abusive consumption of alcohol can lead to brain damage, which in turn increases the risk of secondary dementia from alcohol consumption. Brain injuries caused by excessive alcohol consumption are associated with disorders in the following cognitive domains: anterograde memory, executive functions (decision-making, temporal orientation, verbal fluency), visual-spatial tasks, and working memory.
