The present study refers to the experiences of researchers who conducted interviews and case studies in oral history projects dedicated to the phenomenon of forced deportations in the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic (MSSR), which occurred during the years 1940–1941, 1944–1953. This article presents the results of a qualitative research approach, in which we aimed to identify and analyze the following psychological aspects related to the context of research on the phenomenon of deportations in the MSSR: 1) perception of traumatic material in research interviews; 2) management of affective experiences in research interviews; 3) researchers’ evaluations of how affective experiences influence the research process. The conceptual-theoretical
framework of the research is psychoanalytic. The research results reveal that the historical researcher is in contact not only with factual information, but also with the affective information inherent in the interview. As a result of the content analysis of the texts of the interviews conducted with the historical researchers, it was found that the researcher’s emotional contact with the traumatic material involves intense emotional experiences and leads to important clarifications regarding the object of research. In order to manage the research setting, the researcher is required to achieve a functional splitting, which implies coexistence on the scientific and human, cognitive and emotional dimensions at the same time
