Abstract

This paper aims to be a first step in validating the Regulation of Emotion Systems Survey (RESS; De France & Hollenstein, 2017) in the Romanian population. The questionnaire is a self-report instrument to assess emotion regulation strategies, on 6 scales: Distraction, Rumination, Reappraisal, Engagement, Suppresion and Relaxation. In order to investigate the psychometric properties of this questionnaire, we examined the reliability, factor structure, convergent and criterion validity of the Romanian translation of the RESS. A sample of 227 partcipants (aged 18 to 71 years-old) was investigated in a cross-sectional approach. Participants filled out a socio-demographics data sheet, the Regulation of Emotion Systems Survey (RESS), the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), which assess the emotion regulation strategies,
respectively the severity of depressive symptoms. Because of the high number of missing data, 2 participants were removed from the total number, resulting a final number of 225 participants for the analysis. The results indicated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient between 0.83 and 0.93) and good test-retest reliability over 2-weeks period (Pearson coefficient between 0.72 and 0.83) for all the 6 scales. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis supported the six-factors
strucure, established by the authors of the instrument. To provide a good fit to the data, we removed two items from the original version of RESS. The convergent and criterion validity were confirmed by the correlations with other instruments. The results obtained for the reliability and validity of the Romanian translation of RESS were comparable to the original version.
