TRANSGENDER PRISONERS IN ROMANIAN CONTEXT

The article represents a continuation of a previous article regarding the challenges that transgender detainees pose to the prison system, with a focus on the Romanian prison system. In this respect, starting from the interview of 20 transgender prisoners, two psychologists and a social worker, the research aims to identify their psychosocial characteristics, the existence of consistency between the practices used in the Romanian prison system and the good practices developed in the United Nations level in order to ensure the proper management of transgender prisoners. It was pointed out that the Romanian prison system does not operate with the notion of transgender prisoners, the differentiation of prisoners being based on the criterion of biological sex. Basically, transgender prisoners exist but they are “invisible” to the prison system. The article underlying the importance of training staff in order to ensure a proper intervention in relation to transgender prisoners.
