Abstract

The present study highlights social cynicism as a mediating factor between basic psychological needs and subjective well-being. A sample of 190 Romanian adults female and male participants aged between 18 and 60 years (M = 40.25; AS = 11.16) was investigated in a cross-sectional approach with the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale – General Measure (Chen et al., 2015), which measured the basic psychological needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence, the Social Axioms Survey II (Leung et al., 2012), which measured social cynicism, and the 5-item World Health Organization Well-Being Index, WHO-5 (1998), which measured the subjective well-being. The method used in this research was the survey, and the technique was the questionnaire. In this study, the basic psychological needs were considered independent variables, social axioms mediating variables, and subjective well-being the dependent variable. The obtained results highlight four simple mediation relations, statistically significant, where social cynicism acts as a mediating factor between basic psychological needs and subjective well-being. The study contributes to a better understanding of the importance of social axioms concerning human needs and behaviour.
