Abstract

This study analyzes the concept of psychological contract. Promises and obligations are key concepts in the relationship between employer and employee at the occurrence of the psychological contract. The psychological contract involves a permanent adjustment of the contracting parties, is unstable over time and needs to be reformulated and reviewed at regular intervals by both parties, and ideally there should be an open discussion between the employee and the employer. In order to generate an efficient management, it is necessary to understand its content, how it arises and what it means. The psychological contract was first discussed in the 1959 by Argyris, who described the mutual expectations between employee and employer (Argyris, 1959, p. 163). In 1989, Denise Rousseau published her basic study on the psychological contract, and in 2018, criticizing the limited revisions that were brought to the concept, she brings to the fore the emphasis on the dynamic aspects that underlie the theory of psychological contracts. The psychological contract has been described as an important tool for regulating employee-employer (organization) relationships that helps predict, the type of contributions that employers will receive from employees and the type of rewards that employees will receive from investing time and effort in the organization from employers.
