From Paternal Function to Fatherhood Identity, and Return. Constituent Elements of a Metapsychology of Fatherhood
Keywords:
fatherhood identity, identification, symbolization, paternal function.Abstract
Fatherhood has generally been conceptualized from the perspective of a rather symbolic presence of fathers, as an image of authority, in the conditions of marginalization of fathers concerning to family life, or with its contemporary rewriting as a co-parent, exponent of a neutral gender parenting style. This has led to the ideological exhaustion of the concept of paternal function and to the situation of an identity deficit. My proposal concerns the recovery, albeit fragmentary, of a fatherhood identity by redefining the symbolic paternal aspect, clarifying important concepts in psychoanalysis such as identity, identification, symbolization, and function. Phenomenologically, the question of identity and paternal function is intimately related to the concept of Me and the subjectivity, and to the registers of the Imaginary and the Symbolic. An analysis of these concepts, from a psychoanalytic point of view, as it happens in this paper, implies a theoretical integrative effort, which is in the direction of assuming the common theoretical aspects, difficult to see in relation to the theoretical divisions and differences in psychoanalysis.
