The relationship between social axioms, personal autonomy and organizational behavior: conceptualization of a theoretical model
Keywords:
organizational psychology, social axioms, personal autonomy, burnout, work engagement, organizational behavior.Abstract
Although work engagement, burnout and wellbeing have been studied in organizational context and there are developmental theories that mention social context as a factor in developing personal autonomy (Ryan&Deci, 2001) there is limited research investigating the impact of social context in personal autonomy development and how the corporate behavior is influenced as a result. We are proposing a theoretical model that aims to investigate the mediating role of social axioms in the relationship between personal autonomy and behavior at work. In this model we are using social axioms to define social context, self-development theory, self-esteem and organizational locus of control to describe personal autonomy and work engagement, burnout and subjective wellbeing to describe organizational behavior. If the proposed model is valid, it will help us better understand social context influence in working behavior and will possibly provide a theoretical framework that can be used in order to improve work engagement and wellbeing and reduce burnout in organizations.
