Premises of the success in the deradicalization programs
Keywords:
deradicalization programme; violent extremismAbstract
Subsequent developments after September 11, 2001 and the “globalization” of the terrorist phenomenon have brought in the focus of the decision-makers the importance of development and implementation of programs to deradicalize violent extremists, this approach being seen as having a long-term preventive goal. This article aims to make a presentation of the main models of understanding of the radicalization process but also an assessment of the literature in order to identify common elements that contribute to the success of the deradicalization process. Although these programs are still at an early stage of their development, a number of elements have proven effectiveness in reintegrating former extremists (community involvement, the use of mentoring, Significance Quest Theory). Also, a series of theoretical concepts and practices successfully applied in social reintegration of criminals can be applied in the process of deradicalization. However, an effective evaluation process cannot take place without a transparent access at the results of the programs.
