The mediating role of social axioms in the relationship between personal autonomy and burnout
Main Article Content
Abstract
The present study aimed to test on Romanian population the results proposed by other study, that a high level of social cynicism is associated with a high level of burnout. Participants (N = 141) completed online the social axioms questionnaire, locus of control in the organization scale, organizational based self-esteem scale, self-determination scale and burnout scale. Our results confirm the previous study of Wei, we obtained correlation coefficients r = 0,325 (p <0,001) compared to r = 0,35 (p <0,01) with emotional exhaustion, r = 0,401 (p <0,001) compared to r = 0,34 (p <0,01) with depersonalization and r = 0,232 (p <0,01) compared to r = 0,4 (p <0,01) with reduced personal accomplishments (Wei et al., 2015). Moreover, considering personal autonomy as a personal resource in the Jobs Demands-Resources model (JD-R), we checked whether social axioms mediate the relationship between personal autonomy and burnout. We obtained two simplified but statistically significant models in which the Perception of choice ⇒ Social cynicism ⇒ Depersonalization (total effect β=-0,401, z=4,586, p<0 ,001; indirect effect β=-0,118, z=2,859, p=0 ,004) and Awareness of self ⇒ Reward for application ⇒ Lack of personal achievements (total effect β=-0,686, z=5,511, p<0 ,001; indirect effect β=-0,132, z=2,524, p<0 ,01). The results obtained should be verified in future studies, their confirmation providing new premises for interventions to reduce burnout.
