Abstract
It appears that compared to the general population, the approach to quality of life in the elderly is different. With retirement, contact with former colleagues decreases, socialization decreases and the quality of the marital relationship becomes more important. The current study aims to investigate the following areas when approaching retirement and during retirement in Romania: 1) Family communication and satisfaction and the quality of life, 2) the possible correlations between these elements. A cross-sectional study was performed between 2016 and 2017 with 601 patients (55–93 years old). Were used the Life Quality Questionnaire-short form (WHOQOL-BREEF) and the Family Communication Scale, Family Satisfaction Scale developed by Olson and colab. The correlation between them and the influence of marital status and age on these scales, using the Kruskal-Wallis test have been analyzed. For items 1 and 2 and for the domains of WHOQOL-BREEF, higher mean rank scores were registered for those 55–74 years old, for married people and for those with moderate, high, and very high family satisfaction levels. The participants with moderate and higher levels of communication and family satisfaction said that they were satisfied to a large extent with the quality of their lives. The life quality decreases with age but these age-related inconveniences are better faced by married people who have good communication and satisfaction within the family.
